Life in London's Olympic Borough

Newham is a poor area of East London. It was recently ranked 3rd worst place to live in the UK! Yet this area is set to radically change with 3 major projects:
1. The 2012 Olympic games
2. The building of Stratford International railway station (Eurostar) and
3. The building of Stratford City including Europe's largest shopping mall.

Add to this the imminent arrival of Europe's largest aquarium, London Zoo's Biota project) and the development of the Royal Docks and suddenly Newham looks less of a 'write off'.

Over the past 5 years I have toured the borough's primary schools with a bag of Apple notebooks loaded up with video and still images. Students identified as Gifted & Talented work on creating Digital Stories based upon their experiences of living in the UK's 3rd worst place.

This submission aims to show how Apple products are used innovatively to allow children to comment on how they view their neighbourhood.

The views contained in the project are of the author and not necessarily those of The London Borough of Newham.

Each student in the second grade interviewed a grandparent as part of a social studies homework assignment that ties in with our family unit. Each child then wrote a narrative about his/her grandparent. With adult help, these stories were typed in a word document. Then each student, with teacher and adult help, created a Wordle using his/her typed story. This is how the second grade teachers incorporated "arts" into our social studies curriculum. Each student published his/her Wordle which will be displayed at Indian Creek's Open House. These Grandparent Wordles are from Mrs. Dechant's class.

Young children are curious about the dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago. In this project, Kindergarten students satisfy their curiosity about dinosaurs by reading books and doing activities. They work with older students to learn how to create a picture in KidPix and how to use a video camera. With their older student helper, they videotape each other telling about their favorite dinosaur. Their video is imbedded in their colorful KidPix picture for a sample of their dinosaur knowledge and creative use of technololgy.
