Introduction

Introduction

For our exhibit we focused on the theme of transportation. We gathered pictures, video, and sound bites of modes of transportation we found on a short but sweet walk through the old section of Quebec City. There was lots to capture. We put together our collection and have provided examples and files one could use to create their own exhibit about transportation either in Quebec City or expand upon this and do this exhibit based on your area. It would be nice to add other exhibits from all across Canada to see common and unique modes of transportation and to see how we get around.

Sight and Sound

Music Sounds Come Alive

In this assignment you need to use Garageband to create a sound essay that incorporates the spirit of the transportation of one particular location. The mood of your composition should be reflected in the graphic images that you may choose to use in your final project.

Using Flash

The exhibit logo on the Introduction page is an example of how a recorded sound can be used to design a media text. Starting with the audio only the truck was drawn using the tools in Flash. The background photograph was then looped as a movie clip.

Curriculum Outcomes (Ontario)

Oral and Visual Communication: Students will use speaking skills and strategies appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.

Media Literacy: Students will create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences, using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques

Graphic Novel Example

Graphic Novel Activity

One activity you can do with your students is to create a graphic novel.  Using your pictures and comic life, you can create a graphic novel that will tell a story about transportation.  See other sections for example pages.

Old School Page

It could be a theme on one particular mode of transportation.

Snow Problem Page

Or it could show a variety of transportation modes, but share a common thread like snow for example. The are many ways you can use you pictures in Comic Life to engage your students in learning.

Generic Comic Life Rubric

Here is a generic comic life rubric that can be used as is or modified depending on you needs.

Media Files

Sample Project

Transportation.m4a - audio/m4a

Using Garageband, create a pod-ready presentation. Upload still pictures in the podcast track. Upload transportation sounds to an audio track. Export to iTunes to view as an m4a file (enhanced podcast).

Sample sounds and pictures can be used from the media attached to this project.

Media Outcomes

Assessment

BC Learning Outcomes & Rubrics

This project could be adapted to many subject areas from K-9

The following BC Learning Outcomes will be posted:
Grade 5
Analyze the relationship between the economic development of transportation systems in BC and Canada

Saskatchewan Outcomes

This activity could be done in a variety of classes. One class it would fit in would be Grade 4 Social Studies in Saskatchewan. Here is a link to the online curriculum guide for this course - http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/docs/elemsoc/g4u32ess.html

Ontario Outcomes Rubric

Canada and World Connections: Grade 3
Sample Task: Take a neighborhood walk with your class and a digital camera. Take pictures of your community and school. Using iMovie or GarageBand you can make audio annotations to your picture set. Using iPhoto, Photoshop Elements or SMART Notebook you can make notations to your community pictures. These can be shared with other school communities in York Region and around the world. If you have more cameras available they can be assigned to groups of 5-6 with specific community tasks (houses, plants and vegetation, roads, street signs).

Sample Projects

iMovie Presentation

Quebec.3gp - video/3gpp

Sample culminating task or presentation using GarageBand and iMovie.

Fun with Flash

Using sounds edited in GarageBand students can create appropriate transpotation media using Flash. These can then be exported as Quicktime movies for use as iMovie projects or pod-ready works that can be inserted into the Podcast track in GarageBand.
