This exhibit highlights the study of coastal ecosystems in a third grade classroom. Students at Turtleback Elementary in San Diego, California were able to compare their own local geological, biological, and physical artifacts and compare them with those in North Carolina. Students used a Quicktime VR website to prepare them for a live teleconference with a NOAA researcher, during which they could ask questions comparing and contrasting what they observed. Turtleback students participated with students from all over the country in the award-winning "Estuary Live" project sponsored by the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve Program. As a culmination to weeks of studying marine biology, students took a trip on a San Diego floating marine lab, where they studied fish, plankton, water quality and many other aspects of aquatic ecosystems.
