Specifications for Media Assets

 

File Type Overview

The Student Gallery is currently accepting projects to five permanent collections as follows:

 

Movies: compressed QuickTime versions of video projects generated by AppleÕs iLife and/or pro video applications.

 

Pictures: single images in .gif or .jpg format and/or iPhoto books rendered to either PDF or QuickTime.

 

Music: MP3 files generated by AppleÕs iLife and/or pro audio applications.

 

Presentations: Keynote presentations or Pages projects saved as QuickTime or PDF.

 

Naming Your Files

¥ Be sure that your file name describes your project.

¥ All files need appropriate file extensions (.pdf, .mp3, .mov).

¥ Do not include spaces or punctuation. Use underscores (Ò_Ó) to separate words.

¥ Sample files names: terrysong.mp3, Nate_Presentation.pdf

 

Movies

Best presented as QuickTime.

 

Movies must be compressed before uploading.  Most should be 320x240 pixels (we will accept movies up to 400x300). Movies made at 16:9 aspect ratio should have a maximum width of 400 pixels.  Suggested settings for movie projects:

 

Video Settings

MPEG-4 codec; Frame Rate @15 frames/sec; Keyframes every 75 frames; Limit data rate to 30 KB/sec

 

Audio Settings

MPEG-4 Audio codec; 22.050 KHz sample rate; 16-bit sample size; Mono; Fast Start compressed header; QuickTime Progressive Download up to 300 KB/sec or 35 KB/sec data rate (do not ÒhintÓ the movie); Keyframes every 75 frames

 

To export from iMovie as QuickTime:

1) Choose ÒShareÓ from the File Menu

2)  Choose ÒQuickTimeÓ and ÒExpert SettingsÓ from the popup menu for "Compress movie for."

3)  Click ÒShare.Ó

4)  A dialog will pop up and include an "Options" button. Use the settings buttons to input the settings above. When done, click ÒOK.Ó

5) Click ÒSaveÓ to compress your movie.  

 

Pictures

Best presented as JPEG, GIF, or PDF.

 

Individual photos

¥    Max size = 1000x1000 pixels

¥    Resolution = 72 dpi

¥    Quality = 8 (80%)

¥    Save as a JPEG file (.jpg file extension)

 

Photo books

To create a PDF photo book:

1) In iPhoto, select your book and choose ÒPrintÓ from the File menu.

2)  Choose ÒSave to PDF.Ó

3)  Select the resulting PDF for upload.

 

Non-Photos

¥    Max size = up to 1000x1000 pixels

¥    Adaptive Palette

¥    Diffusion Dither

¥    128 or fewer colors

¥    Save as a GIF file (.gif file extension)

 

Music

Best presented as MP3 or AAC.

 

To export your song:

1) In GarageBand, Choose ÒExport to iTunes.Ó

2) In iTunes, Control-click on the resulting track to pop up a contextual menu.

3) Choose either ÒConvert Track to MP3Ó or ÒConvert Track to AAC           

4)  A new track will appear showing the MP3 or AAC version of the song.

5) Control-click on this new track and choose ÒShow Song File.Ó

6) Select the .mp3 or .aac file for upload

 

Presentations

Best presented as QuickTime.

 

To export a movie from Keynote:

1)  Choose ÒExportÓ from File Menu.

2)  Choose ÒQuickTimeÓ and click the "NextÓ button.

3)  Choose ÒSelf Playing Movie,Ó and adjust the slide/build duration (slide duration of 7 seconds, build duration of 2 seconds recommended) and either of the following: CD-ROM Movie (Recommended) or Full Quality. Note: Only use Full Quality if the CD-ROM setting causes quality problems with the resulting file
